Hillcrest Abbey Cemetery

In 2022 Hughes Funeral Alternatives purchased Hillcrest Abbey Cemetery located in South City St. Louis.

This 5+ acre property is home of the Missouri Crematory which is the first crematorium built west of the Mississippi River.

The crematorium opened in the late 1890's. Many notables have been cremated there such as Frank James, the brother of Jesse James.

The property also house the first built columbarium which holds 1000s of St. Louisiana's urns.

Notable inurnments in the Columbarium are:

Pvt William Giles Hills (1841–1912), American Civil War Medal of Honor recipient
Edward C. Kehr (1837–1918), US Representative
Carman A. Newcomb (1830–1902), US Representative
Paul Tietjens (1877–1943) best known for composing music for The Wizard of Oz, the 1902 stage adaptation of L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, one of the great popular hits of its era.

Hillcrest also offers traditional lawn crypts for burial and indoor/outdoor mausoleum crypts for casketed burials/entombments. Notable entombment is:
