Uncle Ron. Just writing those two words or saying them out loud puts a smile on my face. I'm 100% sure my cousins will also say the same thing with the mention of those two words.
Uncle Ron loved soccer. First he watched his nephews play CYC games, then when Steve and Jeff were old enough to play he cheered them from the sidelines, then he watched his great- nephews play. If given the chance he would have loved watching and cheering his great-great nieces and nephews play soccer too.
As teenagers, a bunch of the cousins got to go on roadtrips to the Indy 500 Trials. Everyone came back excited and talked about their trip. I remember as a kid going to the racetrack and loving that! Didn't matter where a cousin went with Uncle Ron, you knew you would have a good time.
He loved a gathering and having lots of fun. I'm not sure which cousin's graduation party it was, but not wanting the party to end, we wound up back at his house to swim into the wee hours!
A couple of years ago, during the awful Covid period, Uncle Ron turned 80. It was such an awful time for someone so social to not be able to celebrate with his friends and family like he would have if it wasn't for the social distancing! Not sure who had the great idea, but it was suggested to have a drive-by birthday parade for him. We met at the schoolyard a couple of blocks away and a bunch of decorated cars lined up to slowly drive by his house to honk, wave, and shout "happy birthday" to our uncle, brother, and friend! As you can guess, he had a huge smile across his face. Uncle Ron was so excited to see all of us as we did the safe distance greetings! We all even heard some of those famous contagious laughs that we missed during Covid.
I, also, had the privilege of sharing a common interest with Uncle Ron. I had lunch dates with Uncle Ron, along with my parents. With that said, you know where we went and what we did....lunch buffets at the casino and poker!
Fast forward to the last couple of years, Uncle Ron found how to keep in contact with each and every one of us...by his cell phone. He would call and check in with his sisters all the time, then he started calling his nieces and nephews, and then those calls started to include the great-nieces and nephews. Those calls might have been 10-seconds or 5-minutes and could have been about anything from the Cardinals, the Blues, a golf tournament, the weather, or just I haven't talked in a while, how ya doing!
We all will miss our Uncle Ron, but most of all, I'm going to miss those calls when he'd say "Hello, Donna, this is your 'ol Uncle Ron....."
