Patricia A. Hickey's Obituary
Patricia Ann (Lipsmire) Hickey
February 9, 1932-June 15, 2022
Loving sister, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Patricia's gentle smile, great patience, and genuine care for her family will be missed.
Patricia (nickname: Tischy) Lipsmire was born in Jacksonville, Illinois, to Ann and William Lipsmire. Her parents and five siblings-Mary, Louise, Pauline, Ronald, and James-moved to St. Louis in the early '40s. She graduated from Beaumont High School in 1949 and earned her RN at St. Louis University School of Nursing in 1952, met Dr. James Hickey, and married in 1955. She had nine children-James, Dennis (Kathleen), John (M'Evie), William (Karen), Thomas (Yvonne), Mary (Grant), Patrick (Susan), Robert (Erin) and Ann. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and siblings: Louise (the late Marvin Cope), James (Mary), and Ronald (the late Millie Lipsmire). She is survived by her siblings Mary (the late Dan Quartz), and Pauline (the late Paul Carmichael), and by all of her children and sixteen grandchildren-Eric (Amelia), Siena, Nora, Conor, Caitlin, James, William, Alex, Mara, Sofi, Brianna, Dillon, Malakai, Jericho, Maggie, and Ella, and great grandchild, Calvin.
Mom loved gardening, quilting, mysteries, jigsaw puzzles, sweets, and taking walks. She was always friendly and kind to everyone she met. She encouraged a love of nature with frequent trips to the zoo, walks in the park, and hikes further afield. She kept the entire crew fed and clothed and off to school on time. She made a point to have dessert at every meal. She wasn't quick to express her opinion, but if you asked, she always had a strongly held one. Mom attended countless parent-teacher conferences, sporting events, and graduations. Later in life she took up quilting with the St. John's Auxiliary. Her children and grandchildren each treasure the special quilt she created for them. She instilled a love of reading in her children by her example, by filling the house with books and magazines, and by regular trips to the library.
The memorial and celebration of life will be Saturday, July 23, in St. Louis. There will be a separate family graveside gathering. For more information, contact Patrick Hickey at [email protected].
Patricia Hickey was devoted to helping children. In lieu of flowers, the family requests remembrances be made in the form of contributions to Meds and Food for Kids (www.mfkhaiti.org), a St. Louis-based non-profit that helps children in Haiti.
