Margaret Josephine Kaltenthaler's Obituary
Margaret Josephine (Peg) Kaltenthaler (nee Downs) passed away on Monday, March 2, 2026 at her residence in University City, Missouri.
Margaret was born on May 3, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Dr. Vernon S. Downs and Lillian Downs (nee Greer).
Peg was preceded in death by her husband Henry J. Kaltenthaler III, her son Karl, and her sister Mary Ellen Spence. She is survived by her children Ellen (Nathan) Schroeder, Bill (Lisa Fratianni), and Alice, grandchildren Peter, Lizzy, Lucy, Alex, and Samantha, great-grandchildren MaggieMae, Barrett, and Rosemary, and numerous cousins and nieces and nephews.
Peg was a long-time member of Second Presbyterian Church, serving as elder and deaconess, long-time board member of The Green Center, animal observer for the Wolf Sanctuary, and animal observer and volunteer at the St. Louis Zoo.
Per Margaret’s wishes, her brain has been donated to the Memory and Aging Project and her body has been donated to the University of Tennessee Forensic Anthropology Research Facility.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 17, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. at Second Presbyterian Church, 4501 Westminster Place, St. Louis, Missouri 63108.
