Dolores Ann Miller's Obituary
Dolores Ann Miller, 94, died peacefully on December 30, 2023, surrounded by the love of family. She is survived by her children Valerie Miller, Lucia Miller (David Hanlon) and Harry Miller, granddaughter Rose Hoffman, and many dear nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved brother Al Herron.
Dori was born in 1929 to Fred and Ida Herron in Gary, Indiana. The first in her family to graduate college, she attended Indiana University where she met her former husband, the late James D. Miller. Together they moved to St. Louis and raised their children in University City, MO. Thus began Dori's love affair with U. City, its people, politics and history. Dori served as the City Clerk of University City for almost 20 years, retiring in 1997.
Dori had a lifelong curiosity about many subjects including politics, religion, and science, evident in her choice of spiritual community, the First Unitarian Church of St. Louis and its Women's Alliance. Throughout her life, she advocated for peace and justice, inspiring her children to do the same.
Dori's commitment to education, the arts and service to others was apparent in her volunteer activities. These included the Meals on Wheels program, tutoring in the University City school district, and volunteering with COCA, Opera Theatre, and the Rep. At home, she spent many happy hours with her beloved books, puzzles, music, and deep conversation. She traveled the world, visiting diverse destinations in Europe, Asia, South America and Africa.
Her tenacity and sense of wonder endured to the final hours of her life, reflected in her last words: "What comes next?"
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at 2:00 pm at the First Unitarian Church of St. Louis, located at 5007 Waterman Ave. in St. Louis' Central West End. All are welcome to attend.
